RUSSIAN CARGO PLANE FALLING DOWN ELEVEN PEOPLES DIE

MOSKWA - A cargo plane fell soon after takeoff from the town of Mirny, Russia east of Yakutia region, killing 11 people on the plane, said the Russian prosecutor's office said Sunday.

IL-76 aircraft owned by the interior ministry, fell about 1 km from the Mirny shortly after takeoff to Irkutsk, said the commission investigating the Attorney General's office said in a statement.

Russia is one of the countries that have the worst flight safety record of the world, with Soviet-era aircraft are obsolete, airports facilities are outdated, poor plane maintenance and lax standards that make the high number of accidents increases.

Last year all 88 passengers and crew of an Aeroflot Boeing plane died when the plane went down due to fire near the Ural mountains. In 2006, 170 people were killed when the plane TU-154 crashed in Ukraine on the way to St. Petersburg.

An official press interior ministry told the Russian Vesti television networks, the plane swerved to the right immediately after takeoff. "The plane was flying less than two miles with an altitude of 20-30 meters before it crashed near an old mine," he said.
